A new home page
It is still surprising and exciting to me how little time and skill is required to create stuff on today’s web. The new version of plasticshore has some exciting functionality within just one 1 page, 2 widgets and 3 paragraphs - all of which can be thrown together in a mere minutes.
One of these widgets is Google’s Friend Connect, visible as a prominent blue bar right across the top of the site. While the current functionality is rather limited, its ambition is certainly not. One can easily imagine where this kind of thing might go in the near future. I am curious and happy to play with it (and for you to play with it, too). Do join the site and leave me a comment if you please.
So why not Facebook Connect? It does not only sound simliar but promises much of the same after all. For starters I found the integration looked a lot harder (beyond a mere minutes). Secondly, Google’s Friend Connect does not really have a central focus point. All the action happens on participating sites (and deep down in some google data centers). Facebook Connect on the other side is ultimately pointing towards one place and Facebook.com still smells too much like an attempt to build some form of alternative internet to me - and who needs that?
